Temporary or Permanent? How to Know Which One Your Business Actually Needs

Temporary or Permanent

By Callum Sandbrook, Business Development Executive, KSB Recruitment

It is probably the question I get asked more than any other. Should we go Temporary or Permanent?

And honestly, both have their place. Knowing which one fits your situation is what makes all the difference.

So here is how I actually think about it when a client calls me.

When temporary recruitment makes sense

Temp is about flexibility. If you need someone tomorrow, if a member of your team has gone off sick, if you have got a busy period coming up and your current team cannot cover it alone, temp is the answer.

At KSB, all of our temporary workers are employed directly through us. They are on our payroll, fully PAYE compliant, and we take care of everything on that side. What that means for you is that you get the flexibility of a temp without the compliance headache.

It is also worth knowing that temp does not always mean short term. We have clients who have had the same temp workers coming in for months, sometimes years. It works because it suits both sides. The worker gets variety and flexibility, the client gets reliability without the commitment of a permanent contract.

If you need cover fast, temp is almost always the right call.

When permanent recruitment makes sense

Permanent is a different conversation. It is slower, more considered, and it should be. You are making a longer term decision and it is worth getting right.

The clients who get the most out of permanent recruitment are the ones who come to us with a clear picture of what they actually need. Not just the job title and the hours, but what good looks like in that role, what kind of person thrives in their kitchen or their front of house, what the team dynamic is like. The more we know, the better the match.

We fully vet every permanent candidate we put forward. We take the time to understand your business before we start looking, and we stay in contact throughout the process and after the placement to make sure it is working for both sides.

If you are building your team for the long term, permanent is the right route.

The question I always ask first

Before I recommend either option, I always ask the same thing. What does your business actually need right now?

Sometimes that question leads somewhere unexpected. I have had clients call me looking for a permanent head chef and after a conversation we have agreed that a temp while they work out exactly what the role looks like makes much more sense. I have had others call for temp cover who end up taking someone on permanently because the fit was so good.

There is no wrong answer. There is just the right answer for your situation, and that is what we are here to help you figure out.
